Mustang
"Land beyond the Himalayas" is life behind the mountains in a rain shadow area, an alpine desert, located in the Kali Gandaki valley in Western Nepal. Mustang is a "fertile plain" in an arid landscape. The natural system of streams and rivers supplies water for cultivation and daily use.

In Mustang Due to its unique geographical location, wind is a constant factor during the afternoon. It is believed that winds take your prayer to Buddhist paradise. The wind has created the unique architecture of this region.

A higher part of Mustang is “a lost Tibetan plateau,” once a forbidden kingdom and a lower part of Mustang is the Kali Gandaki River valley. In the lower Mustang, Indigenous Thakali people of different Klans reside in different living hamlets. In the upper part of Lower Mustang, the Bonpo religion (pre-Tibetan Buddhism) is practised, while in the lower part, Thakali celebrates its own unique culture and deities blended with Buddhism and Hinduism practices.

In Mustang Chumig Gyatsa, ‘Muktinath’ (3800m) is frequented by Hindus and Tibetans year-round.

Muktinath is a combination of two separate words. Mukti means saviour or Nirvana; Nath means god or master; and Chumig Gyatsa means Hundred Waters. Devotees visit Chumig Gyatsa ‘Muktinath’ Temple for Moksha, or freedom, from the continuous spiritual cycle of birth and rebirth.
